How do I get on the WiFi? (Phones & Computers)

  • Connect to CN-Eagles or CN-Secure
  • If WiFi stops working or you had to change your network password, forget the network and join again
  • Guests can connect to CN-Guest network

How do I register and connect my wired device to the network through the ethernet port?

  1. Go to http://clearpass.hongjiuchina.com/guest on a computer connected to C-N Network.
  2. Select “Create Device” on the left-hand side of the page.
  3. Name your device something you will recognize and remember.
  4. Input device type (ex. Apple TV, Roku, etc.)
  5. Input Wired MAC Address – A simple Google search should provide the steps needed to find your devices’s MAC Address.
  6. Click “Create Device” – You should receive confirmation once you hit submit.
  7. Plug the ethernet cable into your device and into the into the ethernet port and reboot it your device. It should connect automatically.

How do I register and connect my wireless device to the network?

  1. Go to http://clearpass.hongjiuchina.com/guest on a computer connected to the C-N Network.
  2. Log in with your C-N username and password.
  3. Select “Create Device” on the left-hand side of the page.
  4. Name your device something you will recognize and remember.
  5. Input device type (ex. Apple TV, Roku, etc.)
  6. Input the Wireless MAC Address – A simple Google search should provide the steps needed to find your devices’s MAC Address.
  7. Click “Create Device” – You should receive confirmation once you hit submit.
  8. Once finished, on the device you just registered, connect to “CN Devices.”
  9. Use “TalonsUp” exactly as shown inside the quotes as the password.
  10. Accept security certificates

How do I print on campus?

  • Search for printers on your device while on Carson-Newman wireless network (the device can be any device).
  • Add the printer by choosing one of the following-
    1. Black & White Printing – Library, ITS Helpdesk, Henderson Honors, Dorms (Mobileprint__BW)
    2. Color Printing – Library Main Floor (Mobileprint__Color)
    3. Black & White Printing – Dorms (Mobileprint__Dorms)
  • Login when prompted with your Carson-Newman credentials.
  • Login to the printer or scan your ID to release your documents for print.

Authentication

Each user is assigned their own username and password required to access the Carson-Newman network and resources. The use of this username and password combination authenticates you as an authorized user of the Carson-Newman network and systems. This account is to be kept confidential and not shared with anyone.

Usernames and passwords are not to be written down or recorded in any manner where it is not secure (e.g. posted on the monitor, on the desk, under the keyboard, etc.) Violation of this policy will result in the affected account(s) being suspended.

Employee passwords will expire every six months by which time each employee will need to select a new password. Employees will receive e-mails beginning 21 days before password expiration and a notice at log in time beginning 14 days before password expiration (Mac computers will not receive the log in notice). Users cannot use a previous password and they must be a minimum of 8 alphanumeric characters in length.

Student passwords are set not to expire, however you are encouraged to change your password at the beginning of every semester.

We will NEVER e-mail asking for your password!

Email

Mass Email for Announcements of Events, Notices, and Non-Emergency Messages will be sent as daily summaries to appropriate groups.  All messages which will be linked to full text on EagleNet should the recipient choose to read further.

To Send a daily summary email either send an email using one of these addresses OR post directly to the individual announcement boards on EagleNet.  Only authorized Carson-Newman email accounts can send to these addresses.  No outside email address can send to these groups.

This is an AUTOMATED summary. Your e-mail will immediately be posted to EagleNet.

  • A daily summary will arrive in C-N members respective e-mail inbox between 3:00 and 4:00 each afternoon.
  • Students can submit to student daily summaries only.
  • Faculty and Staff can submit to student, faculty or staff summaries.
  • You may NOT opt out of the daily summaries.
  • Faculty and Staff may opt in for a daily summary of student announcements if they choose.

EagleNet Announcements

  • ALL announcements are to be posted on EagleNet, including EMERGENCY (Urgent) announcements. This may be done via email for general and emergency announcements.
  • For-Sale postings will only be located on EagleNet. The seller must post directly on EagleNet.
  • Electronic communication that violates college policies and/or local, state, or federal laws and regulations is prohibited. We reserve the right to delete messages that are deemed abusive, libelous, defamatory, and profane or contain hate speech, violate a
    third party’s right to privacy or are otherwise unacceptable.

Emergency (Urgent) Communications

  • All immediate mass emails with full text will be reserved for *emergency or urgent messages which cannot and should not wait until the following daily summary.
  • All immediate will also be posted to the appropriate EagleNet announcement board.
  • Immediate mass email will be used to send the urgent and emergency messages by:
    • The Office of the President
    • Office of the Executive Vice President
    • Office of the Provost
    • Office of Student Affairs
    • Security
    • Information Technology Help Desk
    • Carson-Newman Maintenance

The office sending the immediate e-mail will also send a copy to EagleNet announcement boards, providing the greatest coverage for emergency communication.

What is and Emergency (Urgent) Communication?

Emergency or urgent need is defined as circumstances under which the appropriate college officer reasonably believes that notification of the college community, or a substantial subset, communicated over the space of several hours, will reduce the risk of personal harm, property damage, or severe negative impact on C-N operations.

Emergency Text Messages

The e2Campus text messaging system (cell phones) would be used for only emergency purposes, including disaster alerts and notification of an excessive interruption of the other two modes of communication.

A Carson-Newman email account using Microsoft Exchange/Outlook is created for all full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, and staff. This is an official form of communication and all employees are expected to log into their Carson-Newman email account regularly and keep it active by keeping its contents within the usage limits.

Faculty/Staff Email

How to Access

  • Outlook Client which comes with the Microsoft Office suite for Windows or Mac.
  • Outlook Web Access is available through any Internet browser and can be reached three ways:

Username

The employee’s user name is determined by their official name on file with human resources.  The user name is automatically set to the first initial and last name of the employee.
example:  Jill Sue Smith’s user name would be jsmith@hongjiuchina.com
If there is a duplicate username already in use your user name may be different.

Password

The email password is the same as used to log into the C-N network, C-N Online/e360, and EagleNet.  It is initially set to the last 6 digits of the employee’s social security number.

Your user name and password combination are what authenticates you on the Carson-Newman network and resources.  In effect this is your Carson-Newman online “identity” for several resources.  You are required to change this password every 6 months. New passwords cannot contain similiar information as the previous password.  New passwords should follow strong password guidelines:

  • Contain both upper and lower case characters (e.g., a-z, A-Z)
  • Have digits and punctuation characters as well as letters e.g., 0-9, !@#$%^&*()_+|~-='{}[]:”;'<>?,./)
  • Are at least eight alphanumeric characters long
  • Are not a word in any language
  • Are not based on personal information

Confidential Information

It is in violation of Carson-Newman policies for any user of official email addresses to:

  • Send personally identifying information via email.  Examples:  social security numbers, No personally identifying information, credit or debit card numbers, security or access codes.
  • Impersonate another Carson-Newman office, faculty/staff member, or student via an others email address.

Privacy

Whenever possible avoid transmitting sensitive data in email.  Although all steps have been taken to keep email secure including password protection and policies against unauthorized access: Do Not Assume Email is Confidential. Once you send an email there is no control of how the email may be forwarded or otherwise copied.

Email Storage Limits

Employee email storage space is limited to holding 1.2 Gigabytes.  This includes the total size of all mail in all of your folders on the email server.  This is plenty of space for many, many messages unless you receive large attachments which can take up your space in a hurry.  Warnings and Closure happens:

  • At 1.0 Gb a warning email is set that the mailbox is reaching capacity
  • At 1.1 Gb sending of messages will be suspended
  • At 1.2 Gb the mailbox will no longer be able to receive mail

Email Sending/Receiving Restrictions

  • Emails containing known viruses are automatically blocked
  • Emails containing file attachments with the extensions: .exe .bat .cmd .vbs .com .scr .pif .dll .ccpl .hta .zip are blocked for security reasons.
  • Email over 9.9MB cannot be sent or received.  This is an industry standard restriction.
  • Number of Emails Sent per Hour
    There is a limit in terms of how many emails may be sent per hour from any one account.  This limit is 200 per hour.
  • Number of Addresses per Email
    No one email may contain more than 99 outside addresses.  This is to prevent other email systems from blacklisting the Carson-Newman domain as a SPAM sender
  • Carson-Newman Internal Mass Electronic Communications Policy

Deactivation/Termination of Email Account

An employee email account is marked for deactivation 90 days after an employee’s last day of employment with Carson-Newman.  Retired employees who will continue to work as adjunct faculty, part-time staff, or research faculty will need their chair or supervisor to complete an extension of email form and file with Information Technology.

If Carson-Newman terminates an employee, the email account is deactivated immediately.

Network & Resource Use Policy

Use of the computing facilities at Carson-Newman University is a privilege available to faculty, staff and students of Carson-Newman University, subject to compliance with certain principles designed to assure that all users have reasonable access to the system and that the action of any one user will not adversely affect any aspect of the work of computer usage of another. In accepting this privilege, you are expected to abide by the following rules of conduct, and compliance with them will be monitored. Disciplinary action will be taken when these rules are violated.

Purpose and Use of Resources

  • Academic use is the primary purpose of the Information Technology resources, including the Internet connection, and always has priority over any other use.
  • Recreational use of the University’s internet connection (such as radio streaming, downloading audio/video files for recreational use, etc.) may be limited or restricted during peak hours.
  • Commercial use of the campus system is not allowed.
  • You are expected to be a responsible user of computing resources.
  • Each user is allocated network disk space for the storage of program, email, data files and other documents generated by the user for college work.  Additional disk space will not be allocated for storage of games or other personal software.
  • Unauthorized installation of software on any C-N computer is prohibited.

Information Security
No information considered confidential is to be saved to the local drive of any Carson-Newman computer, but only to approved network locations such as drive m: and shared network drives where available and appropriate. All computer-related disposals must be handled through I.T. to ensure the secure removal of software / information and to ensure equipment is disposed of safely and properly.

D. Copyright and other Legal Issues:

It is your ethical and legal responsibility to comply with all laws, including copyright laws, as you use the college computer system. Information Technology is not responsible for preventing or detecting illegally installed software or other copyright violations on your computer or the computer assigned to you.Software packages installed on the network are governed by the copyright laws and agreements held by C-N. You may NOT copy software installed on the C-N network by Information Technology without written permission from Information Technology. The unauthorized installation or duplication of materials or software which is licensed or protected by copyright is prohibited. Peer to Peer (P2P) file sharing (Kaaza, Kazaa, Napster, Gnutella, LimeWire, etc.) is a recreational use which consumes computer resources and is frequently in violation of copyright laws. P2P is not permitted on the C-N network. Tunneling or other processes that attempt to circumvent standard methods of data transfer are not permitted. Personal wireless access points are not allowed. Network hubs or other types of network devices not approved by Information Technology are not allowed. No type of packet capturing software is allowed. Servers (hardware or software), including, but not limited to, web, FTP, and file, are not allowed. If you wish to create your own personal web page, contact Information Technology for additional information. File and printer sharing is not permitted on personal computers without permission of Information Technology. Tampering with any university-owned network device or attempts to gain access to networking equipment or any computer not belonging to you, whether university-owned or student-owned, is strictly prohibited.

Violations

Violations or suspected violations of Carson-Newman’s computer use policy or other applicable rules will be investigated by the Director of Information Technology or other individuals as appropriate. An investigation may include examining any information stored on any C-N computing system. The University reserves the right to take immediate actions deemed necessary to safeguard the security of the system and/or the accounts and files stored thereon. Any person who misuses the computer system or university-owned computer equipment will normally be denied access to and use of the system and its resources. Other disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed include, among others termination of employment legal prosecution for the imposition of civil or criminal penalties.

The University will cooperate with civil authorities in the investigation and prosecution of crimes involving campus computer systems.

To help ensure you have access to the important information you will need to know for a successful start C-N provides an email account to each student who validates their admission.The student email policies provide guidelines regarding the following aspects of email as an official means of communication with students:

Carson-Newman Exchange (Outlook) e-mail is an official system used for Carson-Newman email and should be checked daily throughout the academic year. C-N will not be forward to a personal e-mail account.

User Name
Your student’s email user name is created from your official name on file with the Registrar’s office. The user name is automatically set to the first initial, middle initial and full last of your name.
example: Ex. John D. Smith is jdsmithPassword is initially set to the last 6 digits of social security number.

Note: If two students (past or present) have the same first initial, middle initial and last name the student information system automatically assigns a random number after your last name. If in doubt of what your user name may be, please contact the IT Helpdesk for assistance.

Appropriate use of student email
All use of email will be consistent with other Carson-Newman Information Technology policies, including the General Information Technology Policy for Students.

Confidential Information

Assignment of student email
Carson-Newman email accounts will be created automatically for all enrolled students at the time of admission. This email address will be used to contact the student prior and after enrollment. Carson-Newman does not sell email information to third parties.

Expectations of student use of email
Students are expected to read and respond as appropriate to their Carson-Newman email on a frequent and consistent basis. Since many of the communications will be time sensitive it is advisable to check this official email daily.

The student is also expected to keep the email storage space maintained to help insure the receipt of important C-N messages.

Redirecting of student email
The Carson-Newman assigned email address will be the address used by C-N faculty and staff to communicate to students. Students who auto-forward these messages to another address such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc., do so at their own risk. Carson-Newman is not responsible for the handling of email by third parties.

Daily Announcements
All students, undergraduate and graduate receive the Daily Announcements from EagleNet. Since these e-mails may contain official communication from the College, you cannot opt out of receiving the Daily Announcement.

Privacy
Email users should exercise extreme caution in using email to communicate confidential or sensitive matters and should not assume that email is private and confidential.
Confidentiality of student records is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). All use of email, including use for sensitive or confidential information, will be consistent with FERPA.
